ACENDIO is deeply saddened by the passing of Nick Hardiker, former Board Member and Treasurer of ACENDIO (from 2015 till 2021), who died peacefully at home following a long battle with serious illness. Nick was a highly respected colleague within ACENDIO and a globally recognised pioneer in nursing informatics whose work has had a lasting impact on nursing science, education, and nursing practice.
Nick brought to ACENDIO a rare combination of clinical nursing expertise, technical excellence, and strategic vision. His educational background in both nursing and computer science positioned him as one of the few scholars able to bridge nursing practice and informatics. As a member of the ACENDIO Board and its Treasurer, Nick was known for his integrity, clarity of thought, and deep commitment to the organisation’s mission. He provided steady and thoughtful leadership, contributing to strong governance and the long-term sustainability of ACENDIO, while consistently advocating for collaboration, and international engagement in nursing informatics.
Nick’s influence extended far beyond ACENDIO. He played a pivotal role in the development and alignment of standardized nursing languages at European and international levels, including work with ISO, and as director of the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP) Programme. He played a critical role in the harmonisation of ICNP with SNOMED CT and the Clinical Care Classification. He also served in senior leadership roles within international informatics associations, such as the IMIA Nursing Informatics Working Group.
Nick will be remembered not only for his exceptional professional contributions, but also for his warmth, generosity, and collegial spirit. He was a valued colleague, mentor, and friend to many within ACENDIO and the wider nursing informatics community.
On behalf of ACENDIO, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
Claudia Leoni-Scheiber (President), Helen de Graaf-Waar (Vice President) with the entire ACENDIO Board of Directors.
